We discover that they have different equivalents in English.

Before starting to see which these differences are, let´s have a look at some sentences:

This book is for you. Este libro es para tí.
To go to the hospital, you need to take the bus. Para ir al hospital, necesitas coger el autobús.
Will you come home for my birthday? ¿Vendrás a casa por mi cumpleaños?
I like walking in the street. Me gusta pasear por la calle.
In the evening I always visit my mother. Por la tarde visito siempre a mi madre

Let´s try now to understand the difference between "por" and "para"

Lo he hecho para ella. I have done-made it for her (to give it to her, for example a painting, clean the dishes...)
Lo hago todo por ella. I do anything for her (for example, work hard, earn money, etc. In a word, for her welfare, happiness, etc.)

Me voy para la montaña (I am going to the mountain, same as me voy a la montaña)
Me voy por la montaña (I am going through the mountain) Walking through the mountain.

Vamos para el pueblo (we are going to the village) Same as "vamos al pueblo". Same meaning.
Vamos por el pueblo (we are walking through the village, among its streets, people. etc)

Para demostrar que es cierto..... (to show or proove that it is true.....)
Por demostrar que es cierto, te regalo un reloj (Because you prooved it to be true, I am giving you a watch)

Le llamaron para hablar del tema. (They called him to speak about the issue)
Le llamaron por hablar del tema . (They called him for having spoken about the issue)

Try to guess the correct preposion. ¿Por or Para?

But first.... a little hint: "Para" has a sense of movement towards the outside. Salgo para comer un poco.
While "por" has many times a sense of contrary movemet, it goes to a cause, to the inside. Por haber sido bueno, te regalo un caramelo (Because you were good, something happened before and therefore there is an action. Of course, it can also be the equivalent for "through" and some other preposition. As for "para" there is always a sense of doing something without a cause, this is for you, para tí, and not because you did something before that makes want to give you something. It´s because I want to, because I feel like doing it, from feelings, etc.)
The best example could be: Esto es para tí por haber sido bueno (this is for you for having been so good)

Now try to find the correct preposition. Answers will be published next week. And we will continue practising "por" and "para". Good luck!

Antonio camina ..... la playa
Estoy vestida ...... ir a la fiesta
He comprado libros ....... los estudiantes.
Jaime está estudiando ------ ser doctor
Me alegro ...... tí

Use of verb ESTAR

-We use it when we want to express a certain situation in space or time, circumstances, states, intentions, the moment when something takes place, etc. It's meaning has to do with "permanent state of being", "occupiying a place", "living in some place", "stay at some place", etc. Let's see some examples:

¿Dónde es? ........ Where does it take place?

¿Dónde está?...... What kind of space does it use or employ?

Being able to make the difference between these two examples is essential in order to understand the subtilities of SER and ESTAR.

What can we say using the ver ESTAR?

-We can ask for a place. ¿Dónde está mi primo? ¿Dónde vive María? ¿Dónde está mi libro?

-We can situate people, things and-or places giving them a determinded space.

El libro está encima de la mesa. María está en el colegio. Mi hermano está en casa de Angel. El hospital está en Barcelona

-We can indicate someone or something´s presence or abscence:

Antonio está aquí, en su habitación. No está, está en el cine. Mis libros no están aquí, ¿dónde están, entonces? ¿Están en casa de Alba...??

- We can indicate the position of someone or something:

Estoy de pie desde las siete de la mañana.

-We can also indicate an attitude towards something or someone:

Estoy de acuerdo con lo que dices. Estoy acuerdo con Antonio

-Activity:

Carlos está de viaje de negocios. María está de gira (tour) por América

-Attitude:

Antonio está triste. María está de mal humor. La niña está sana.

-Opinion:

La comida está buena. Attention, if I say "la comida es buena" the sense is more "good for the health" while "la comida está buena" means "good for the taste, delicious".

-Something that is bound to happen:

Está al venir, está al caer (bound to happen) Las Navidades están al caer.

-An action´s result:

El libro está escrito. Attention, if we say ¿Cuánto es? meaning how much is it? is not the same than if we say ¿a cómo está....? meaning "how much does THIS cost, what is its price, not when we ask "how much is it" after taking some goods. ¿A cómo está el arroz hoy? is a question we make even if we don´t take rice (in this example) , it´s just an enquiry to have some information.

-To say the date:

¿A cuánto estamos hoy? (¿Qué día es hoy?)

Let´s understand now the differences using common sentences:

José es un preocupado (personality) José está preocupado (about something)

José es un despistado (he is always this way) José está despistado (right now)

María es una mujer muy serena ( permanent) María está serena (at this moment)

Carlos es muy guapo (permanent) Carlos está muy guapo (by the way he is dressing)

Esteban es un hombre muy seguro de sí mismo (personality) Esteban está seguro (about someone or something)

La calle es estrecha (built this way) La calle está estrecha (new elements making it difficult to pass)

El campo es verde (permanently or almost) El campo está verde (because it rained, for example)

La niña es estudiosa (as always) La niña está estudiosa (today)

NEXT POST: Try to guess if the sentence needs "SER" or "ESTAR"

To go to/ (ir a )- To come from/ (venir de)

We are going to see how these prepositions (a, de) work in this case.

"To go to" becomes in Spanish "ir a"
"To come from" becomes in Spanish "venir de"

ir= to go
venir= to come

Now let's see how we build sentences using these verbs and prepositions:

(Yo) voy a Madrid = I am going to Madrid
(El) va a la escuela = He is going to the school.

(Ella) viene de Madrid = She comes from Madrid
(Nosotros) venimos de la escuela = we come from the school

VERY IMPORTANT REMARK:

a la escuela (when the noun is feminine, in this case "escuela")
al colegio (college) (when the noun is masculine. Remark this "al" : It is a contraction of "a + el". Carlos va a el colegio becomes "Carlos va al
colegio.

The same occurs with "del". It is a contraction of "de + el". Carmen viene de el banco becomes "Carmen viene del banco."

We use these elements contracted when they come before an article and a noun: yo voy a EL COLEGIO. We say then : Yo voy AL COLEGIO.

PRACTICE

feminine nouns with article: a la (to)
masculine nouns with article: al (to)

feminine nouns with article: de la (from)
masculine nouns with article: del (from)

Some examples:

Hoy Carlos va al banco (to the bank) Banco is a masculine noun.

Hoy Carlos va a la tienda (to the shop). Tienda is a feminine noun.

Carlos viene ahora del banco.
Carlos va ahora al banco.

If we don´t use any article, we will not use "al" or "del".

Examples: María va a Barcelona . Antonio va a trabajar (to work) but Antonio va al trabajo (to his work or place of work) Trabajo is a masculine noun, therefore we use "al" and "del". Antonio viene del trabajo.

Yo voy a Barcelona. But: Yo voy a la ciudad de Barcelona. Exceptions will be with those adjectives that are invariable (either used with masculine and / or feminine nouns)

Here we are going to see some examples regarding variable and invariable adjectives.

Let's take the following nouns:

Hombre , m.(man)

Mujer, f. (snail)

And we will take the following adjectives:

guapo (m.) - guapa (f.) (handsome, pretty, beautiful. Guapo applies to people, not to animals and or objects.)

bonito (m.) - bonita (f.) (pretty, beautiful. Applies to animals, objects. By looking up to the verb.

Estudio (yo) , cantas (tú), etc.

Obviously, we will always say usted and ustedes in order not to mistake it with él or ella and ellos or ellas, as they have the same verbal form.

GRAMATICA: Verbos Cantar-Hablar-Ser-Estar-Trabajar

TEST

Fill in the blank spaces and write the convenient verb (in present tense)
Cantar:
Yo canto, tú cantas, él canta, nosotros cantamos vosotros cantáis, ellos cantan

Hablar:
Yo hablo, tú hablas, él habla, nosotros hablamos, vosotros habláis, ellos hablan

Ser:
Yo soy, tú eres, él es, nosotros somos, vosotros sóis, ellos son

Estar:
Yo estoy, tú estás , él está, nosotros estamos, vosotros estáis, ellos están

Trabajar :
Yo trabajo tú trabajas, él trabaja, nosotros trabajamos, vosotros trabajáis, ellos trabajan

START HERE:
Tr......... en una oficina.

Por la tarde tr.... como enfermera.

Mis hijos no ha....... todavía, porque s....... muy pequeños.

Mi amiga me h....... de cosas privadas: de su madre, de sus probemas, de su novio. To Be??

Let's have a look at the verb "to be":
I am
you are
he,she,it is
we are
you are
they are

What spanish verb is the equivalent for "to be"?
Is it SER?
or.. ESTAR?

The thing is, both verbs mean To Be but in different ways. While SER designs a place, a person or a thing with an UNCHANGEABLE CHARACTERISTIC, that is to say, a characteristic that WILL NOT CHANGE, THAT IS INMUTABLE, on the other hand ESTAR is used to design, in most cases, a characteristic that CHANGES, IS MUTATABLE OR STATIONARY.
Let's see first what are those verbs:

SER:
Yo soy
Tú eres, Usted (formal you singular) es
El es, ella es
Nosotros somos, Nosotras somos
Vostros sois, Vosotras sois, Ustedes (formal you plural) son
Ellos son, Ellas son

VERY IMPORTANT : Note that Usted and Ustedes ALWAYS USE THE THIRD PERSON IN SINGULAR AND PLURAL, EVEN IF USTED AND USTEDES EXPRESS TU IN A FORMAL WAY.
This verb is used to designate, in most cases, PERMANENT CHARACTERISTICS of a person, a place and - or a thing.
To understand this point, just answer a simple question: where are you from? If you are Italian for example, this is a characteristic that cannot change all through your life, and even if you aquire another citizenship, it will be written on papers but in essence you can't change the place where you were born, isn't it? you will still be Italian no matter how many news nationalities you aquire, your place of birth will always be Italy.
Then you say Yo soy italiano

Now let's have a look to another situation, this time let's see the word "asleep". When I am asleep, I am under a CHANGEABLE situation; meaning that after a while, I will wake up. It's not a permanent situation but Temporary. The same happens with the verb "raining". Even if there is rain for days, weeks, months... one day it will be the sun shining again. The rain is TEMPORARY as well. This the perfect example of the verb ESTAR.

Let's see how to conjugate this verb:
Yo estoy
Tú estás, Usted está (see again how I use estar in "Usted") I use the third person singular. Look:
El está, Ella está
Nosotros estamos, Nosotras estamos
Vosotros estáis, vosotras estáis , Ustedes están (again, see how Ustedes uses the third person although it means You in a formal way)
Ellos están, Ellas están.
Yo soy española (this is a fact, it can´t change even if I have many other nationalities, my place of birth will always be Spain)

Now, está lloviendo ( it is raining) está nublado ( it is cloudy) and not es lloviendo or es nublado, because those are transitory characteristics of the weather.
Estoy aquí (I am here). Eventually I will change of place. It´s mutable, transitory. I use ESTAR.
Juan es aburrido (John is boring) His personality is boring. He is this wayNow: Juan está aburrido (John is bored ) This is a temporary situation, sooner or later he will change of activity and will be amused, or sad, or busy, etc.
Juan está triste (John is sad) (now, at this moment)
Juan está ocupado (John is busy) (now, at this moment)
Juan es un hombre triste (he is always sad, he is a sad person)
Juan es un hombre ocupado (he is always working, he is a busy person)

Of course, this can also be confusing at times but little by little it will become more understandable.
These are some guidelines for you to keep in mind when speaking about SER and ESTAR:
SER: To describe a characteristic in a person, a thing, a place that doesn´t change in most cases. And, if it does change, it does it slowly. Also to describe a posession and the material something is made of:

Examples:
Ana es inteligente

María es vieja. (María is old) One moment, she wasn´t old before, right? Before, she was young! That´s true, but the change from young to old was slow, it needed years. María was young and little by little she became old. Therefore we use the verb SER.

La camisa es de algodón (the shirt is in cotton)

La casa es blanca (well if it changes of color, it will not happen all of a sudden, it will need some days to become green for example) La casa es blanca.

verb ESTAR
Usted está cansado (you are tired)
La ventana está cerrada (the window is closed)
El gato está arriba (the cat is upstairs)
El gato ES negro (the cat is black)
El gato está hambriento (the cat is hungry)
El gato es mío (the cat is mine)

Try to solve this test:
Ella .......... de Francia
Antonio .... en casa (at home)
Ustedes no ..... simpáticos (nice)
Mohammed ..... ingeniero (engineer)
Mi tío (uncle) no ...... en el parque (at the park)
Mi hermano ....... cubano
María ........ contenta (happy)
¿....... Carlos haciendo sus deberes? (doing his homework)
Ana no ------ inteligente
Mi padre y mi hermano ....... profesores (teachers)
Mi amigo ..... muy bajo (short)
Mi amigo ...... muy triste (sad)
Tú ..... loco (crazy)
Tú ..... un loco (a crazy one)

ANSWERS:
es
está
son
es
está
es
está
está
es
son
es
está
estás
eres

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lecciones-de-espanol.blogspot.com/2004/10/to-be-or-to-be.html' title='To be or.... If so, why there are different way to say you in Spanish?

Let´s explain this briefly: Té is the familiar way of "you". It applies for both male and female. Usted is the formal way of "you". As well applied for both male and female

Vosotros: Familiar form of plural (male, female)Ustedes: Formal form of plural (male , female)

Now what does it mean familiar and formal?

If you address to your someone by his-her last name or if you would address to someone using his-her last name if you knew it.... then you must use USTED.

The same applies for the plural.

For example:

Té eres mi amigo (you are my friend) When you address to people like a close friend, a student, your family, etc.

but

Usted es mi amigo (you are my friend) . When you address to someone in a formal way , either using his-her last name or not using it for the mere reason that you don´t know which one is. For example:

Usted es muy amable (You are very nice) This you applies for example to: your teacher, a president, a doctor, a prince, an old person, a famous person, someone older than you that you don´t know, or someone who is your age or younger but bearing a title, like prince.

How would you address to the following people in Spanish?

The president of Spain - el presidente de España (tú or Usted)?
your brother - tu hermano (tú or Usted)?
your dentist - tu dentista (tú or Usted)?
an old person you don´t know, at a shop (tú or Usted)?
a child at the park (tú or Usted)?

answers: Usted, tú, Usted, Usted, tú

VOCABULARY I: Common Expressions- Expresiones Comunes

Buenos días - Good morning
Buenas tardes - Good afternoon
Buenas noches - Good night

Note: Good evening can be translated in Spanish as "Buenas noches" in the sense that "Buenas noches" is not just an expression said just before retiring oneself to sleep.
